One of the first things we talk to new air conditioner owners about is the air filter. We can set up an entire air conditioner, size it, measure it, install it, and get it running right on that first appointment. But we won’t be able to know when the air filter is dirty and needs to be changed out. This is why our customers need to be aware of these important components and why they often require routine replacement.
The good news is that your air filter can be replaced without the help of a licensed technician. The bad news is that you’ll need to learn a little bit about how to do this before you attempt to try it on your own. Sure, your AC has a manual that can walk you through it, but many people lose or misplace this manual at no fault of their own.
So, let’s talk about how important your air filter is and why changing it regularly could stave off AC repairs in Sarasota, FL.
What Your Air Filter Accomplishes
There are a lot of contaminants in the air that do more harm to your air conditioner than you. Dust and pet dander might not be comfortable to be around, but it usually won’t harm you unless you’re allergic to it. On the contrary, dust and dander can do serious damage to your air conditioner, gunking up the coils and causing the airflow to get blocked.
This air filter serves as the first line of defense, protecting your AC from those contaminants that would otherwise wear it down.
Why It’s So Important
What can go wrong if you leave your air filter there? Well, a few things.
Your system can suffer from subpar efficiency levels since it has less access to fresh air. It can also start malfunctioning, growing ice on the coils, providing uncomfortable temperatures, and even overheating or breaking down if the filter gets too clogged.
Changing the Filter
First things first–you’ll want to turn off your air conditioner. Changing the air filter while the system is running is not a good thing to do, and it could end up doing more harm than good when you put everything together.
When the AC is off, you don’t risk any contaminants entering the system since there’s no airflow. This allows you to locate the return air duct so you can find the air filter and replace it.
Your AC’s air filter is usually going to be labeled with an arrow or some kind of flap you can lift up to remove it. Remember the way it’s facing since your new air filter needs to face the same way when you put it back. For reusable air filters, just wipe it down with a damp paper towel (and let it dry off). But for disposable air filters, just toss it out and replace it with a new one. They’re pretty inexpensive at a hardware store.
And voila! You’re ready to turn your AC back on and get back to enjoying your life.
